Manav Seva Snasthan- SEVA is implementing Community Reach(HIV/AIDS prevention among Migrants) in 53 villages of Jungal Kaudia Block of Gorakhpur and in Gorakhpur city from last 8 months. Project intervention focus on reducing the vulnerability, promoting safe/informed migration & inducing positive health seeking behavior among the economic migrants and their spouse, potential migrants towards HIV and AIDS & STD in the project area. Project target the potential migrants and their families, current migrants and their spouse and the community in general. The project is also targeting panchayat (local self government) functionaries, village level health committees, Community Based organizations (CBOs), local NGOs, recruitment agencies and labor contractors, block and district administration and service providers.
Project Goal:
The development goal of the project is to reduce STI/HIV transmission within high risk economic migrants and their spouse, potential migrants in Jungle Kaudia block of Gorakhpur district.
Project objectives: The following are the objectives of the project
Ø To create an enabling environment so as to ensure the sustainability of HIV prevention initiatives.
Ø To create community level supportive structures and build capacities of traditional structures to support and promote STI/HIV prevention and safe migration program.
Ø To increase and sustain knowledge of HIV-preventive behaviors among the migrants, their spouse, potential migrants and community and empowering women to enhance their participation in HIV prevention.
Ø To generate demand for STI/HIV and safe migration services and enhances capacity of service providers to respond to the needs of targeted population.
Ø To promote social marketing and partnerships with private sectors to increase access and distribution of condoms
Project approach and strategy:
The proposed project will bring into play the following approaches, (a) behavioral changes/social mobilization, (b) institutional and knowledge development, (c) empowerment, (d) network and linkages, and (c) convergence to meet the desired goals of the project. The project will have the following four primary project elements (1) enabling environment for HIV prevention, (2) focused prevention through IEC, behavior change communication (3) condom promotion and social marketing and (4) prevention & management of STI/RTI/UTI and access to information through panchayat driven Swasthya Suchana Avam Seva Kendra and developing effective linkages with service systems
Project activities: The following are the activities initiated by project
· The project initiated an assessment on the targeted beneficiaries (primary and secondary) to gauge their knowledge, attitude, and practice in represent to STI/RTI and HIV and Aids.
· Identifying stakeholders and social sanction meeting
· Coordination meetings with health dept and service providers
· Strengthening community level support systems
· Behavior change communication programs
· STI/HIV and safe migration services through Community based dispensaries (Swasthya Suchana Avam Seva Kendras) in project areas
· Condom promotion program
· Migrant information kiosk - transit level one-stop solution model
Expected project outcomes: The project expects following outcomes by the end of the project period:
Ø Against baseline 10% more migrants are able to identify all the modes of transmission of HIV by the end of the project
Ø In compare to the baseline 15% more migrants are able to reject at least two myths attached to HIV, by the end of this project
Ø In compare to the baseline 10% migrant repot having used a condom in the last sex with a non regular, non cohabiting partner, by the end of this project
Ø 80% of migrants who reported symptoms of STI, have received quality services (express satisfaction) from a referral center identified by the network, by the end of this project
Ø 50% of Migrant identified with HIV is linked to MLHA network by the end of this project. |
